Digital Survival Kit: The 7 Apps You Need to Survive (and Thrive) in Hunan
China lives on the smartphone. Without these apps, you're playing the game on 'Hard Mode.' Here is the essential list of digital tools for payment, maps, and translation.

The Big Two: Alipay & WeChat (The Only Wallets You Need)
In Hunan, cash is becoming a relic of the past. Even the grandmother selling spicy potatoes on the street corner uses a QR code. For you, Alipay is the undisputed king. It’s more 'international-friendly' than WeChat Pay. You can link your Visa, Mastercard, or Amex directly to the 'TourPass' or the international version of the app. Why Alipay? Beyond paying for dinner, it’s an all-in-one ecosystem. Inside Alipay, you can use the 'Didi' mini-program (for taxis), the 'Transport' QR code (for the Changsha subway), and even order food. WeChat is great for messaging, but setting up WeChat Pay can sometimes be a headache for foreign passports. My advice: set up Alipay before you even leave your house.
Navigating the Chaos: Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps
Forget Google Maps. In China, Google’s data is outdated and the GPS offset makes it look like you're walking through buildings. You need a local map. I recommend Amap (Gaode). Even though it's in Chinese, the icons are intuitive (a bus for bus, a car for taxi). Local Trick: Use the copy-paste method. Find the Chinese name of your hotel on Trip.com, paste it into Amap, and follow the blue line. It’s more accurate for walking directions in the narrow alleys of Changsha or the mountain trails of Zhangjiajie. If you’re really stuck, Apple Maps (on iPhone) uses Amap data and works surprisingly well in English.
Breaking the Silence: DeepL & Pleco
English levels in Hunan, especially outside Changsha, are low. You will need a translator. DeepL is currently the most 'natural' sounding AI translator for Chinese. For reading menus, use the camera feature in the Google Translate app (yes, Google Translate works without a VPN if you download the offline data, but it's hit or miss). For the serious traveler, download Pleco. It’s the gold standard for English-Chinese dictionaries. If you're trying to explain a specific food allergy or a complex request at a train station, Pleco's 'Screen Reader' and 'OCR' features are life-savers. Don't be afraid to show your screen to people; we're used to communicating via phone screens!

Practical Information
- ConnectivityThese apps need data. Get a local SIM or an eSIM (like Airalo or Nomad) before you arrive.
- App StoreSwitch your Apple ID to the China region if you need specific local apps, but for the 'Big 7', your home store should be fine.
- BatterySince your life is on your phone, carry a power bank. You can also rent them ('Jiedian') in almost every restaurant using Alipay.
